Abridge Ladies Raise £15,189 for Drugsline

posted 10 Jun 2011 03:44 by Web Master   [ updated 16 Jun 2011 03:15 ]

Ladies from Abridge Golf & Country Club took part in their annual charity day and raised £15,189 for Drugsline.

2011 was the 19th annual ladies charity day at Abridge Golf & Country Club. It was attended by veterans who have been many times before and for some this was their first time.

Evey year the ladies section of the club nominates a different charity to support, there are many many worthwhile causes out there and we are very grateful that this year Drugsline was chosen.

At the welcome speech Debrorah Jacobs explained why she supports Drugsline

'I feel myself to be a very privileged person. I have a loving husband two wonderful sons and two beautiful daughters in law. I have my health, my strength and my energy to follow any corse I choose.Others are not so lucky. Some of the most intelligent and inquisitive usually sensible people turn to drugs and do not know how to put their lives straight. There but for the grace of G-d go I. I am fortunate that I have never had to seek the advice ,guidance and support of Drugsline but feel their work is so important for those who need it. The charity is free to those who need it including family and friends of those who have drug or alchol problems'

Our Executive Director, Rabbi Sufrin MBE was there to accept the cheque and thank all those that attended and supported Drugsline.

Drugsline is one of the first to use new, free text message service to raise funds

posted 19 May 2011 06:14 by Alan Wohlman   [ updated 19 May 2011 06:42 ]

Drugsline will be amongst the first charities in the country to use its own, unique personalised text code, DRUG11, to raise funds using JustTextGiving by Vodafone.

This is a brand new, free service for charities, that has no set up or fundraising costs for charities, no network charges for people making donations and every penny donated goes to charity.  Gift Aid can also be added to donations.

From today, supporters of Drugsline can make donations of up to £10 by texting DRUG11 and either 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 to 70070 to make their donation.  The text message is free and all of the donation will be passed to Drugsline.

Alan Wohlman of Drugsline said: “This is a wonderful way for us to raise money as it’s speedy, simple and spontaneous.  Most people have a mobile phone these days so we expect this to be very popular with our supporters. Donating just £2 will ensure our outreach team that delivers education to 1000’s of children every year can continue and our freephone helpline and drop-in centres stay open to everyone in need ”

Touching, personal and important... a must-see documentary about big issues. Grant Rollings, The Sun

The most significant socially-motivated documentary I've seen... staggering, heart-breaking, and needs to be seen across the UK. James Murray-White, freelance writer and reviewer

Clear-eyed stoicism is just one of this admirable film's qualities. Kieron Corless, Sight & Sound

ABOUT THE FILM:

The old mill town of Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire has a reputation as being something of a bohemian idyll, a thriving tourist destination and a haven for an artistic community. Filmmaker Jez Lewis who grew up there, was forced to question this image of the place, particularly as he was returning there frequently to attend funerals of childhood friends who had developed drink and drug problems or committed suicide.

Beginning with a personal quest for understanding, asking why people of his generation are killing themselves the film moves into a year-long drama of human tragedy and redemption as principal character Cass comes to terms with his own mortality and attempts to lift himself out of his cycle of self-destruction. Spending time with Cass, his friends and their families, Lewis finds them smart, articulate, funny and occasionally heroic, despite their often desperate circumstances. Shot through with compassion, SHED YOUR TEARS AND WALK AWAY is a timely, bold, and deeply personal documentary film.

Drugsline Volunteer Recognised for Outstanding Contribution

posted 17 Jun 2010 04:30 by Alan Wohlman

Every year UK helplines handle over 29 million calls, some 2.6 million emails, and almost 1.8 million text and instant messages on a vast array of health, social welfare, public service or educational issues.

The Helplines Association (THA) is the umbrella organisation for non-profit helplines across the UK and Ireland, and works to ensure that every caller receives the best possible service when calling a helpline.

BT supports The Helplines Association as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility to grow its business in a way that benefits its customers and society using communications technology to help tackle social and environmental challenges.

The Awards include four categories: ‘New helpline of the year’, ‘Innovative use of technology to deliver a helpline service’, ‘Helpline Staff Member of the year’ and ‘Helpline Volunteer of the Year’.

Lawrence was a finalist in the Helpline Volunteer of the Year category. He was nominated by Drugsline's Volunteer Co-ordinator Chavi Sufrin, who said: "We feel Lawrence deserves recognition for the outstanding contribution that he has made to supporting others over the past 19 years. We know that he will continue to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to provide support to those who need it most for many years to come."

Lawrence said: “Winning this award isn’t just about me but all the hard work and dedication of the people I work with. Our team has given more than I could have ever imagined and I know we’ve made a huge impact in the community we serve. To be acknowledged in this way and winning this award is fantastic. I’m truly delighted.”

Rekha Wadhwani, Chief Executive of The Helplines Association said; “The BT/THA Helpline Awards give us an opportunity to recognise and reward helplines which are committed to high quality standards. We are delighted that the helplines showcased in the awards this year embrace technology in innovative ways, and collaborate with each other to provide a better service to the public.”

Beth Courtier, BT’s Community Investment Programme Manager said; “BT has supported THA since 1996, supporting its aim of providing advice, consultancy and training to helpline services in both the voluntary and statutory sectors. And The Helplines Association Awards are a great opportunity to recognise those who give their time to providing vital public services. I am particularly delighted to see recognition for ChildLine this year with whom BT has a long and proud partnership.”
