Drugsline Expert appears on ITV’s This Morning

23rd October 2006,

Drugsline's Outreach Team Leader, Darren Gold, was invited to appear on ITV1’s This Morning programme on Monday 23rd October to talk about his experiences as an addict and as an expert in drug’s education.

Darren relayed his personal story; describing how his addictions spiralled out of control and his journey to recovery. He led a question and answer phone-in; providing viewers with the opportunity to express concerns and ask for advice.

Darren responded to the recent media coverage of George Michael's behaviour with regards to drug use. He voiced his unease about the effects of such irresponsible behaviour from iconic figures in the media spotlight. He fears that with the media as powerful and influential as it is, the wrong message is being sent out by those who are respected and admired. 'Smoking cannabis, just like any drug use, is potentially very dangerous. People say it doesn"t affect them negatively and that it causes no harm; but I guarantee that if you ask 100 heroin addicts what drug they first used, they will all say cannabis.’

Darren and Anjula Mutanda, This Morning’s resident psychologist, discussed the importance of educating parents and teachers as well as young people. ‘Drugsline holds Outreach sessions for parents as well as going into schools to speak to students; it is vital that parents know what to look for and then how to help’.
