Initiated by Cllr. Mark Aarons of Redbridge Council, who admirably braved the pool and completed an impressive number of lengths, the Big Swim proved to be a huge success.
Inspired by the Outreach sessions led by Drugsline’s School workers, the teachers, pupils and parents of schools across Redbridge, were excited and enthusiastic, with young people from King Solomon, Ursuline, Valentines, Ilford County, Wanstead and Davenant High School all working together towards a common goal.
Tim Campbell 2005 winner of the Apprentice encouraged and supported the pupils taking part by cheering at the poolside throughout the event and presented every participant with a certificate. Mr Campbell was inspired and impressed by the children’s determination to succeed and reach their self-set targets. He commented, ‘With the right opportunity, every child can succeed and exceed their expectations – today, Drugsline has provided just that. I am privileged to be here to witness the dedication of all those involved with Drugsline and I hope I can work with them again in the future. Without the appropriate education and support, it can be all too easy to fall into the path of drugs. Drugsline’s work tries to prevent this on a day to day basis and I admire them greatly.’
Lee Scott MP, Cllr. Alan Weinberg, Leader of Redbridge Council and Peter Sandell, Corporate Business Manager of Barclays Bank, who also swam to raise funds for Drugsline, all supported the event and those involved.
Rabbi Sufrin, Drugsline’s Executive Director, would like to thank everyone who took part or sponsored a swimmer. He commented; ‘The Big Swim was an enjoyable and worthwhile event; it represented the importance of engaging young people with the fight against drug addiction, empowering them to make informed decisions about their own lives. Drugsline is so grateful for everyone’s hard work and for sharing our passion – to prevent damaged lives and encourage open and honest dialogue between people of all ages.’
Trophies will be presented to Ilford County High School, who completed the most lengths, as well as the school that raised the most money. Several thousand pounds was raised on the day, which will make a significant contribution to Drugsline’s valued education programme.
