Counselling

The ability to talk openly and frankly with a trained counsellor is indispensable to the process of kicking drug and alcohol addiction. Often the substance abuse is only the most obvious sign of wider internal feelings of anger, fear or disappointment. Drugsline believes the use of trained counsellors to discuss users’ issues makes a real difference to the outcome of abstinence-based drugs rehabilitation programmes.

Harry is Drugsline’s lead counsellor and, as a recovering dependent himself, realises more than most just how much every drugs-dependent person longs to kick their habit.

After recovering from drugs dependency with the help of counselling
and group therapy I felt I had been given a special gift which I should
share with other sufferers to help free them from the scourge of drugs.
So I trained as a counsellor and have helped sufferers for the past 15 years.

Once a dependent reaches a decision to stop using drugs they desperately
need help to stick with it and draw on their inner strengths to pull through
and recover their self-esteem. All I need do to strengthen my resolve to
help them and stick by them is to remember my own pain. Helping to heal
just one afflicted drug user reaches out to at least five other people around
them and it’s a wonderful reward to see dependents whom I have helped
become counsellors themselves, reinforcing our fight against drugs.
